Hygiene is particularly important when you menstruate. You should wash the genital area with mild soap before each catheterization. To avoid getting blood on the catheter, change your sanitary napkin or tampon before emptying the bladder. You can also hold a piece of tissue in front of the vaginal opening while you insert the catheter.
